We reference the momme measurement in our reviews quite a bit – but what is the momme measurement when it comes to silk bed products? Well, it’s a traditional scale for measuring silk fabric which originated in Japan many moons ago. One momme = 4.340 grams per square meter; 8 mommes is approximately 1 ounce per square yard or 35 grams per square meter. To give you an idea, raw silk is roughly 35mm and clearly far to heavy for linen. Our research has led us to the conclusion that anything with less than 19 momme is too lightweight for pillow cases, whilst above 25mm starts to lose its smoothness. Note that the higher the momme score does not always mean a better quality product – it depends on what it’s being used for.
You will also see OEKO-Tex certification mentioned. This means the silk used in the pillowcase has been thoroughly tested for harmful substances like chemicals and dyes. A score of 100 indicates the product is as pure as can possibly be. For more information on OEKO-Tex standards click here.
